The American Library Association (ALA) has awarded the 2023 Core/OCLC Spectrum Scholarship in Library and Information Technology to Wei Ling Goh. Goh works as an information desk and outreach assistant at Strathcona County Library, a public library in Sherwood Park, Alberta in Canada. While based in Canada, she is pursuing her MLIS online at the University of Missouri-Columbia and is excited to graduate at the end of 2024. She was selected for the Core/OCLC scholarship for her interest in the role that digital librarianship and library technology play in increasing access to resources for underserved populations.
“My first career was as a high school teacher and I transitioned to public librarianship as this field is the perfect confluence of my interest in public service, community partnerships and information accessibility. I am especially passionate about promoting and integrating DEI in all aspects of the library field, including empowering underrepresented and vulnerable groups, like BIPOC communities and newcomers to Canada. Working closely with patrons and finding ways to meet their needs is one of my favourite parts of my job! I am thrilled to be a 2023/2024 Spectrum Scholar and I look forward to building a community and collaborating with fellow scholars, so that together, we can make the library field even more equitable.”
The Spectrum program funds scholarships through its endowment and the contributions of individuals and organizations whose donations support named scholarships in the Spectrum Family of Funds. Since 1997, ALA has awarded more than 1,300 Spectrum Scholarships. In conjunction with sponsor OCLC, ALA’s Core: Leadership, Infrastructure, Futures awards its 2023 Spectrum Scholarship to a student with a demonstrated interest in library technology.
