Member Opportunities & Announcements
- We need your talents! Complete the volunteer form to get involved in Core. For most of our committees, the appointment process starts in February and finishes in April so that new committee members can begin on July 1. You must be a member of Core to serve on a committee or chair an Interest Group.
- Preservation Week 2025 is April 27 to May 3! This year’s theme is Preserve the Past, Shape the Future: Inspiring the Next Generation. The 2025 honorary chair is Mychal Threets, a librarian, literary ambassador, and “the library’s number one fan.” Learn more about this year’s theme and programming at the Preservation Week website.
- The Library Reboot for the Mid-21st Century webinar has been rescheduled to Tuesday, June 10 from 1:00pm – 2:00pm CT.
- Information Technology and Libraries (ITAL), Core’s quarterly open-access, peer-reviewed technical journal, is hiring an Assistant Editor. Send a letter of interest and a summary of your qualifications to Ken Varnum, editor, at varnum@umich.edu by April 18, 2025. The ITAL Assistant Editor is a member of the ITAL Editorial Board, assists with evaluation of submitted articles (“desk review”) prior to peer review, and manages the journal’s peer review process, including communication with authors. This role also shares duties for copyediting and layout of articles accepted for publication with the Editor, assists with publicity and content development for the journal, and advises the ITAL Editor on policy and strategy. This appointment is for a renewable three-year term (July 1, 2025, through June 30, 2028). The position comes with a $1000/year stipend. The individual must be a member in good standing of ALA and its Core division during the entire period of service.

- Have you volunteered with Core, or are you interested in volunteering with Core? Have you experienced barriers to participating with Core? Core is investigating offering grants/scholarships for a limited number of members (via an application process) to participate as volunteers in ALA and Core that otherwise may not be able to participate. We invite you to complete this brief online survey that will help identify the financial and time-based commitments members make as volunteers.

- Core is offering several Fundamentals Web Courses throughout 2025! This series of related online courses covers basic topics that enhance skills in various areas of library work.
- Core is seeking nominations for the Core Presidential Citations. These very special awards honor Core members who make significant contributions to the division and to the profession but whose accomplishments do not fall within the criteria for Core’s other awards. They are awarded by the current Core President on an annual basis. Recipients are selected by the Core President based on achievement. Core membership is required to be eligible. The Core President notifies recipients in spring of the year received, and the awards are presented each year at the Core President’s program during ALA Annual Conference. If you would like to nominate a member for consideration, please fill out this nomination form by May 2nd, 2025.
