Each month, we feature a Core member for an interview profile called #IAmCore. This month, meet Rachel Scott, editor, Library Resources & Technical Services, and Head, Acquisitions & Cataloging Services at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.
1. Describe yourself in three words.
- Curious
- Persistent
- Vivacious
2. Describe Core in three words
- Colleague
- Community
- Connection
3. What do you value about Core?
What I find most valuable about Core are the opportunities for collaboration among a close community of peers engaged in similar work—we can all learn a great deal from each other.
4. How long have you been a Core member?
Four years strong
5. What drew you to and continues to attract you to the Core Community?
I joined Core for the opportunity to edit Library Resources & Technical Services—an established journal in the field. I stick around because of the amazing colleagues—the Core Journal Editors group in particular—that bring insight into the work of managing a journal and some laughter in the process.
6. What are you working on now that you’re excited about? ut?
The Core Journal Editors, Core Past-President Angie Ohler, Members of Core’ Marketing and Social Media Committee, and others have been working to secure the sustainability of open access publishing for the journals. It is an incredibly complex landscape, but the work is important and we’ll press on!
7. What are you currently reading/listening to/watching/making?
I’m currently listening to Guide Me Home, the third book in Attica Locke’s Highway 59 Novel series. I recently started a new job, and my commute provides ample opportunity to listen to audiobooks. I welcome your recommendations for women authors of crime fiction!
8. What advice can you share with others for a fulfilling and beneficial Core experience?
I’m grateful to my Core committee and group members for making the experience much more fun and fulfilling than it would be otherwise, and I want others to enjoy a similarly beneficial experience. I’d recommend volunteering in areas where you have strong interests and a willingness to learn; the Core colleagues I love working with—Michael, Elizabeth, Cinthya, Ken, and Joanna—bring not only their expertise and experience to the table, but also their curiosity.
