This month, meet Emily Thompson, who isa co-author of A Complete Guide to Creative Technology Spaces in Academic Libraries: Media Labs, Makerspaces, and More, published by ALA Editions/Core and Director, Studio, University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.

3. What do you value about Core?
I appreciate the areas of librarianship it brings together. Sometimes we get so wrapped up in our own particular areas, we forget to check in to see what others are up to. Core makes a point of bridging the gaps between leadership, technical services, and technology and makes us keep talking to one another. I’m never disappointed in a conversation with a fellow member.
4. How long have you been a Core member?
Since the beginning. I was in LLAMA and just migrated over.
5. What drew you to and continues to attract you to the Core Community?
I find the people to be very encouraging. They’re a group of problem solvers and there’s really no one better to brainstorm an idea with.
6. What are you working on now that you’re excited about?
I recently did a course about integrating the NACE Career Readiness Competencies into our student assistant positions, and I love having a new vocabulary to work with.
7. What are you currently reading/listening to/watching/making?
I got the Zero Waste Patterns Book for Christmas a couple of years ago, and now no bedsheet or tablecloth is safe. The garments are all cute and the clever cutting is very satisfying. It’s also helped me work through my stash!
8. What advice can you share with others for a fulfilling and beneficial Core experience?
Honestly, make a place for the Forum. It’s really a wonderful way to meet people, and all of the sessions are helpful.
Anything else you’d like to share?
Overall, I find Core to be very forward-thinking. It’s great to talk to other members and see where they see the profession heading.
